Firework Displays Light Up the Sky Across Scotland

A Guide to Bonfire Night and Hogmanay Celebrations

As the nights draw in and the temperature drops, Scotland gears up for its annual fireworks extravaganzas. From Bonfire Night to Hogmanay, there are plenty of opportunities to marvel at spectacular displays illuminating the skies.

Bonfire Night

Also known as Guy Fawkes Night, Bonfire Night is celebrated on 5th November. It commemorates the foiling of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605, when a group of Catholic conspirators attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London. Fireworks have been a traditional part of Bonfire Night celebrations for centuries.

This year, there are organized firework displays taking place in various locations across Scotland, including:

  • St Margarets Hope
  • Glasgow Fort
  • Edinburgh

Hogmanay

Hogmanay is the Scottish word for New Year's Eve. It is a time of celebration and festivities, and the fireworks displays are a major highlight. Edinburgh's Hogmanay is world-renowned and attracts visitors from far and wide.

In 2023, Edinburgh's Hogmanay celebrations will include:

  • Fireworks displays at Edinburgh Castle
  • The Auld Lang Syne singalong
  • Street parties and live music

Safety First

While fireworks can be a dazzling spectacle, it is important to remember that they can also be dangerous. It is always safer to attend an organized firework display. If you are planning to set off fireworks at home, please follow these safety tips:

  • Only use fireworks that are legal in Scotland.
  • Follow the instructions on the packaging carefully.
  • Set off fireworks in a safe, open area away from buildings and people.
  • Never point a firework at anyone.
  • Keep children and pets away from fireworks.
